Love-Your-Bull: Tips For Responsible Pit Bull Ownership

Love-A-Bull: Pitbull Rescue and Adoption South Africa

We, at Love-A-Bull, are more than just a breed specific rescue, we also consider ourselves advocates for the very vulnerable Pit Bull breed and as such, want to encourage all Love-A-Bull friends to be responsible Pit Bull owners.

From more than 20 years of combined experience with the Pit Bull breed, here are what we consider vital tips for being a responsible Pit Bull owner:

Socialise Your Dog

American Pit Bull Terriers were bred to be fighting dogs. It’s not uncommon for even well-socialise pit bulls to act aggressively toward other dogs. It is for this reason that we strongly advocate you socialise your Pit Bull. But that you always manage them in a group and always control their excitement levels.

Keep Your Pit Bull Safe

This breed is very vulnerable to theft. Always keep your dog away from entry gates, partition your garden if you need to so that your Pit Bull is not visible from your gate.

Secure Your Property

They can be jumpers and can scale very high walls. You need to ensure that your property is secure and that the walls are high enough to prevent your Pit Bull from simply hopping your fence.

Keep Your Dog Indoors At Night

Pit Bull’s have hair, not fur, so they are very sensitive to the cold. Keep them indoors at night, not just to keep them warm, but to keep them safe from criminal elements they may try to steal them while they are unsupervised and alone outside at night.

They Are NOT Guard Dogs

Pit Bull’s generally tend to be very fond of people. It is for this reason they make terrible guard dogs. If you are wanting a guard dog, a Pit Bull is not for you.

Be Aware Of Who Has Access To Your Dog

When walking your dog, always be aware of your surroundings and of anyone who shows special interest in your dog. You need to accept you are walking with a highly coveted dog on a leash to certain elements.

NEVER Hit Your Pit Bull

Too many people are under the false impression that Pit Bull’s are tough and need to be hit/kicked. This is the furthest thing from the truth. They are deeply loyal, loving dogs, they LOVE people. Be gentle with your dog, a verbal reprimand will suffice. If you feel the need to hit or kick your Pit Bull, consider an Anger Management course, for yourself!

We are so often contacted to offer assistance from Pit Bull owners whose dogs have escaped, been stolen or having behaviour issues.

It is our passion and our privilege to work with our community in encouraging responsible Pit Bull ownership.

Peace, Love, Pit Bulls!
